Visual Arts & Crafts

Benicia is home to painters, sculptors, photographers, wood turners, illustrators, metal smiths, ceramicists, jewelry designers and other artists, with studios scattered throughout the city, but primarily concentrated in Benicia's intriguing Arsenal arts district.

“Traveling to the Benicia Arsenal is much like falling into the White Rabbit's hole. The Wonderland Adventure begins by passing through large wrought iron gates and taking several forks and bends in the road until the waterfront district of the Arsenal is before you. This area holds mystery and edginess with a mix of history and industry. Artists share space with galleries, event facilities, antique and furniture stores, manufacturers, and an active port. The buildings range from historic to converted factory plants.“

The Arsenal's twice-yearly Open Studios events are parallel to none, in part due to the Arsenal's nearly 100 artists being concentrated into a relatively small, walkable area. In contrast to most open studios events, visitors are able to park their cars and walk to dozens of artist studios, making it possible to see much more art than at other similar events.

Art Walk

Benicia Art Walk 2016 is on the Second Saturdays in June, July, September, and October from 3:00-6:00 PM on First Street in downtown Benicia. Mike Kendal -- Off the Wall

As part of its 30th anniversary celebration, Arts Benicia will honor Mike Kendall, one of its first exhibiting artists, with a one man show during Benicia Artists Open Studios. Kendall’s paintings and sculptures will be on view in the Arts Benicia gallery April 8 - May 7, 2017. Arts Benicia is wheelchair accessible from Jackson Street. Exhibit Hours:  Wednesday - Sunday, 12:00 - 5:00 PM.

Intimate Apparel is described as a thoughtful, affecting play that offers a poignant commentary on an era when the cut and color of one's dress-and of course, skin-determined whom one could not marry, sleep with, even talk to in public.

Art Scavenger Hunt

Discover amazing art found in downtown galleries while doing a scavenger hunt. Participants will receive a free “I Love Benicia” bag and be entered into a drawing to win $100 in Downtown Dollars.
