Visual Arts & Crafts

Benicia is home to painters, sculptors, photographers, wood turners, illustrators, metal smiths, ceramicists, jewelry designers and other artists, with studios scattered throughout the city, but primarily concentrated in Benicia's intriguing Arsenal arts district.

“Traveling to the Benicia Arsenal is much like falling into the White Rabbit's hole. The Wonderland Adventure begins by passing through large wrought iron gates and taking several forks and bends in the road until the waterfront district of the Arsenal is before you. This area holds mystery and edginess with a mix of history and industry. Artists share space with galleries, event facilities, antique and furniture stores, manufacturers, and an active port. The buildings range from historic to converted factory plants.“

The Arsenal's twice-yearly Open Studios events are parallel to none, in part due to the Arsenal's nearly 100 artists being concentrated into a relatively small, walkable area. In contrast to most open studios events, visitors are able to park their cars and walk to dozens of artist studios, making it possible to see much more art than at other similar events.

Art Walk

Benicia Art Walk 2017 is on the Second Saturdays in June, July, September, and October from 2:00-6:00 PM on First Street in downtown Benicia. Come for lunch and stay for dinner and tour eight amazing galleries hosting the fun this year with live entertainment and other activities. Click here for the Benicia Art Walk 2017 brochure and map. Art Exhibit Sublime: Prints on Paper Susan De Haven and Carol Brent Levin

The Marilyn Citron )’Rourke Art Gallery at the Benicia Public Library is proud to present an exhibition of Hand-Pulled Prints on fine art paper by artists Susan De Haven and Carol Brent Levin. Works included in this show portray a variety of printmaking processes including etching, lithography, and relief. Many of the prints in this exhibit were inspired by nature. Artist Reception is open to the public on June 29, from 6:30 -9:30 PM.
