The special, temporary exhibit opened on April 6, the anniversary of America’s entry into World War I (1914-1918), commemorating those Benicians who lost their lives in the “Great War”. It's an opportunity to learn about the horrors of trench warfare affecting millions of soldiers in Europe. The exhibit also incorporates material on the flu epidemic of 1918, which played a deadly role during World War I.

Exhibit artifacts include helmets, uniforms, weaponry, and items used by soldiers in the trenches. All military personnel, current or retired, always have free entry to Museum exhibits; regularly scheduled hours are 1-4 PM, Wednesday - Sunday.

Photos of two northern California wetlands sites are being presented. In addition to subjects such as pickleweed, reeds, and water, there are photos of Archaea, a microbe which is a 3-billion year-old life form, one of the oldest on earth. Microbiologist Wayne Lanier, PhD, who identified the Archaea, wrote an article to accompany this exhibit.

More Than Just Words: An Exploration of Poetry as a Life Force

Is poetry really just a bunch of obscure words, put together in lines that rhyme, or is it more than that? Johanna Ely, the current Benicia poet laureate, and three previous poets laureate, will explore the theme of poetry as a life force. Light refreshments will follow.


Ely, along with Don Peery, Lois Requist, and Ronna Leon, will be reading some of their own poetry, as well as responding to a few interview questions, presented by First Tuesday poet, Mary Susan Gast. They will also read poems written by Benicia’s first poet laureate, Joel Fallon, and second poet laureate, Robert Shelby, both of whom died in 2016. Audience members will be invited to ask questions after the reading.
