Family Fall-Tastic: Five Events, One Day!

Welcome the arrival of the fall season with a day bursting with fun family events, all within easy walking distance of each other!

Get inspired by local artists & live music, enjoy an adorable puppy costume contest & obstacle course, and let your little ones get their wiggles out exploring a real-life fire station (and bouncy house). There's even a hand-blown glass pumpkin patch and an interactive "zombie painter" to discover! As always, downtown Benicia offers free parking, and all events are free to attend.

Fire Department Open House

Kids can tour the inside of a real-life fire station and all kinds of emergency vehicles (including a Coast Guard vessel!) during the Benicia Fire Department Open House .

Learn from firefighters about fire prevention in your home, watch them use a fire extinguisher to put out a real fire, and learn hands-only CPR.

Recommended Route

Start your day with Benicia's 3rd Annual Dog Festival , held alongside the town's sparkling waterfront, beside the historic Southern Pacific Railroad Depot. Then take a stroll along First Street to enjoy Benicia's charming downtown while immersing yourself in the local art scene with live demonstrations at the final Art Walk of the year .

As you pass the beautiful City Park Gazebo, turn left and head through the park to find the Fire Department Open House , happening right next to the enormous wooden castle that is the Playground of Dreams (another can't-miss experience, if you're bringing the kids).

Finally, head back through the park and cross First Street to browse the Library's Second Saturday Book Sale and the Fall Market at the Senior Center. The easiest route is the small walking trail across the street from the park's gazebo.

Total walking time is 30 minutes.

Happy Life Pottery will be featuring a brand new casserole dish collection by our main potter extraordinaire, David Stellato. This collection will be created exclusively for the Artwalk, and has never been offered before! Created for showcasing the warm dishes of the upcoming fall and winter months, David’s new collection of gorgeous, handmade pottery casserole dishes will have styles featuring lids and styles without.

Additionally, we will have a sampling of gorgeous student work for sale, including some work by our brand new (and very skilled) intern who comes to us all the way from Texas, Ella Laun. She has been an amazing addition to our staff and we’re excited to finally have some of her amazing work for sale!

To round out the variety of new releases created exclusively for the September Artwalk, Amy & David Stellato will have a few more vases available born from their collaboration from the July Artwalk. These vases are a true collaboration in skill and artistry, as David created them and Amy hand-paints the floral pattern. The pieces they created for the July Artwalk were such a huge hit that they have created a few more items that will also be available at the September Artwalk.

View the beautiful dichroic glass jewelry and glass mosaic work of Michalen Silva. Dichroic glass is a non-translucent glass that is produced by stacking layers of glass and micro-layers of metals & oxides, creating a shifting of colors & iridescent light play.

Get into the holiday spirit with Benicia’s Annual Holiday Open House & Tree Lighting! One of the most popular events of the year, the celebration features family fun all along First Street, including live music & entertainment, costumed carolers & Disney characters to interact with the kids, and wine by the glass for mom & dad (available at Benicia Main Street)!

On Friday, December 2nd , from 6-9pm , the length of First Street will be closed to traffic, allowing visitors to stroll the street, enjoying shopping, singing, and holiday cheer!

The tree lighting can be viewed at approximately 6:30pm, at the foot of First Street.

First Street merchants will offer seasonal beverages & treats, and show off their holiday goods. Visitors will also enjoy live entertainment by Kris Kringle and the Mistletones.

Benicia's 15th Annual Scarecrow Contest Has Begun! Browse the Entries and Vote for Your Favorite

Every year in October, the businesses of downtown Benicia battle it out in the Annual Scarecrow Contest . This is not your average scarecrow competition, Benicia is home to one of the largest artist communities in the Bay Area, and the creativity of Benicia business owners is next level.

Visitors are invited to stroll along First Street to marvel at this year's scarecrow creations and vote for their favorite, while enjoying the unique shopping , delicious dining , and memorable activities that Benicia has to offer.

Voting ends on Oct. 23rd, however scarecrows will be on display through Oct. 31st. Pick up a ballot at Benicia Main Street or any participating businesses.

Making Headlines All Across the Galaxy

One House Bakery 's entry this year, " Pan Solo" - a life-size bread sculpture of Han Solo frozen in carbonite - has gone viral all around the world!

The sculpture has generated thousands of pieces of press coverage, millions of views on social media, and was even recognized on Twitter and Instagram by Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill !

Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Benicia Art Walk celebrates one of the Bay Area’s most active art communities, with live entertainment & demonstrations at 8 galleries in downtown Benicia.

Come for lunch and stay for dinner. You’ll find great shopping and dining, live music, amazing historical sites and a beautiful waterfront: a Great Day by the Bay!

Annual Scarecrow Contest

While you are strolling First Street, keep an eye out for Scarecrows ! The Annual Benicia Scarecrow Contest means one-of-a-kind scarecrows will be on display outside of businesses from Oct. 7th - 31st.

Vote for your favorite or just take the time to appreciate the creativity. Ballots are available at Benicia Main Street, located near the waterfront at 90 First Street. Voting ends Sunday, October 23rd.

Dixon's painting and sculpture boldly and playfully capture her subjects through line, paint, collage, and mixed media. Purnell's paintings are inspired by the beauty of the natural landscape, captured with a painterly sense of calm and restfulness.

"We are so different, and we learn from each other. There's always plenty to talk about." The exhibition extends through October 30.

At Gallery 621 view a featured Artist Exhibition called WOVEN, showcasing the work of Kelly Webster and Daniel Hunter. Kelly Webster’s prints, paintings and sculptures depict woven fabrics, twists and spirals seen in nature, as well as a compulsion to collect. All suggesting aspects of an anxious nature. Anxiety, tension, relationship, what is seen and what is hidden are all expressed within the work.

Daniel Hunter has developed a new style of work for his series entitled FABRICations. Hunter cuts the two-dimensional plane into strips and weaves it into new constructs. For the first time, he has introduced printed fabrics with enamel paint and a resist process blending it all together. The main gallery will also feature new work by the Gallery's nineteen artists.

It is time for Benicia's annual Scarecrow Display Contest !

Starting now and running throughout the month of October , businesses on First Street will display unique scarecrows outside of their shops hoping for your vote! But don't be fooled, this is not your average scarecrow competition, the businesses on First Street go all out!

Visitors will not want to miss the chance to experience the creativity of Benicia's business owners first hand. Just take a look at the submission above titled "Alligator Loki" from One House Bakery, it is made out of bread!

Ballots are available at Benicia Main Street, near the waterfront at 90 First Street. Voting ends Monday, October 25.

Take a Wine Walk with Witches and Zombies

We Are Back!

Benicia Art Walk returns to celebrate its 10th year, promising locals and visitors a rejuvenating weekend outing exploring one of the Bay Area’s most active art scenes , viewing live demonstrations from local artists, enjoying live music in the air every Saturday, and even getting a chance to win a $200 arts gift card!

The event is free to the public, and there’s always plenty of free street parking nearby.

With all the participating galleries within easy walking distance of each other (not to mention all the shopping and dining options) along Benicia’s historic First Street, Art Walk is accessible to people of all ages. Be sure to also look for the new additions to First Street - Scarecrows ! Unique scarecrows will be on display outside of businesses along First Street throughout the month of October. All attendees can participate in the Benicia Art Passport competition . Hosted by the the Galleries of First Street, an organization comprised of the eight First Street galleries, guests can stop by any participating gallery, pick up an Art Passport and then get it stamped at each of the Art Walk galleries for a chance to enter a $200 drawing to be redeemed at an any participating gallery.

The Art Walk runs from 1pm-5pm, every second Saturday of June, July, September and October. We recommend arriving a bit early, giving yourself time to visit One House Bakery to stock up on pastries and supplies for a scenic picnic to-go. Local Galleries Honor the Memory of 9/11

This Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, and the City of Benicia will be honoring the memory of the event during Benicia Art Walk on First Street, from 1pm-5pm.

While visitors this weekend will still be able to enjoy the fun & inspiring art galleries and breezy downtown experience of Benicia Art Walk, several of the galleries participating in the event will also be featuring photographs and art remembering the nearly 3,000 people from 93 nations lost to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the crash of Flight 93.

Flag Memorial

Benicia Fire Department will mark the anniversary by honoring the 343 firefighters and all those who perished that day with a flag memorial on the lawn adjacent to the gazebo in City Park , at First Street and Military West. Visitors are encouraged to stop by, honor, reflect, and share in this day.

Fire Department personnel will be there from 7 a.m. until sunset. Benicia bagpiper, Lloyd Christiansen, will offer a tribute at 6 p.m.

Free to Everyone

The Benicia Art Walk event is free to the public, and there’s always plenty of free street parking nearby.

A Chance to Win $200 for Attending

All attendees can participate in the Benicia Art Passport competition . Hosted by the the Galleries of First Street, guests can pick up an Art Passport and then get it stamped at each of the participating galleries for a chance to enter a $200 drawing to be redeemed at an any of the eight galleries.

An All-Day Experience

The Art Walk runs from 1pm-5pm, every second Saturday of June, July, September and October. We recommend arriving a bit early, giving yourself time to visit One House Bakery to stock up on pastries and supplies for a scenic picnic to-go. And, whether you want to cap off the evening with dinner with the kids at Sailor Jack’s or Bella Sienna , or even settle down with a tasty cocktail, Benicia’s unique and one of a kind dining options are the perfect way to end your day while escaping the bay.

Live Artist Demonstrations and Participating Galleries

HQ Gallery

333 First Street, Suite D

The gallery offers a packed schedule of activities in September. Visitors will find original watercolor artworks by featured artist Samantha McNally. Participants in the gallery’s Scavenger Hunt will have an opportunity to win a prize painting donated by McNally.

A new art exhibit entitled, ‘Autumn Days’ is on display showcasing original paintings, drawings, photography, ceramics and more, created by 20 local member-artists.

Live music will be performed by Marcy Orendorff on acoustic guitar and vocals, playing a mix of classic and contemporary folk. A fun specialty of Marcy’s is creating an original ‘song-on-the-spot’, upon request.

Once Upon a Canvas

The gallery will have a painting demo by Connie Millholand from 1 – 3:30 p.m. and will be streaming powerful photos from the 9/11 tragedy.

Arata Art Gallery

637 First Street

The gallery is participating in a unique charity auction of original art. Ten local artists have modified a dozen different mannequins to be auctioned off with the proceeds going to various charities. Arata Art Gallery (along with HQ Gallery and Estey Gallery at 216 First Street) will display the mannequins until the September 14 auction at the historic Jefferson Street mansion. The auction will be a vaccinated-only event from 5 – 7 p.m., offering free parking and free admission. Stop by the galleries for a preview.

In honor of 9/11, the gallery will celebrate the gift of life with music and joy, while honoring and remembering those who lost their lives tragically so many years ago. Featured artist Jessica Robinson will be in the gallery from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. sharing her clay creations.

Entertainer, singer and rock violinist Gary Krohn will perform from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Mary Lou Correia is the gallery’s featured artist in September. Her exhibition “September, Colors of Joy,” will be on display September 7 – 30. The show features a collection of works painted during the pandemic.

Stop by to view the watercolor realism by Berkeley-based artist, Susan Cady McAllister, for this one day only. In addition, they’ll have a new, never-before-seen, special collection of gorgeous mermaid mugs by artist Amy Stellato and her husband David. These mugs are a collaboration of hand-made artistry and wheel-thrown functionality and are a rare offering from this very busy husband-wife team!

The gallery’s owners are collaborating with Arts Benicia to present the contemporary paper collage work by Virginia George, inspired by Mid-Century Modern artists including Henri Matisse, Slender Calder, and Jean Arp. Stop by for refreshments and art appreciation.

All attendees can participate in the Benicia Art Passport competition . HQ Gallery will be giving away a collaborative painting created by several of its member artists, in a drawing to be held on July 10th during the Benicia Art Walk.

HQ gallery will also be hosting a brand new gallery-wide scavenger hunt . Find the small pieces in the artwork in their new gallery installation. Get them all correct and you earn a HQ Gallery special pen, and you will be entered into a monthly scavenger hunt drawing to receive a new petite piece of artwork from artist of the month, Barb Duvall. Duvall’s vivid digital, ink and acrylic paintings feature the unique relationship between ourselves, animals and nature.

Benicia's HQ Gallery opens with an exhibit entitled, “Celebrate Art” from July 1st through August 29th, showcasing paintings, drawings, photography, ceramics, digital, mixed media and needle art created by local member artists.

Once Upon a Canvas will feature two great artwork demonstrations inside their studio from 1 – 4 p.m. Artist Beth Grimm will feature her iPhone artistry and artist Tina Hariu will share her oil portrait creation of the Golden State Warrior’s best shooter. The studio will offer a gift with purchase, refreshments and music by Marcy Orendorff.

Artist Jose Luis Varto is the featured artist for July. Meet this prolific master and view his work at Arata Gallery during the Benicia Art Walk. Since his arrival in Benicia six years ago, he has produced an incredible amount of paintings, sculptures and drawings that include some of his imaginative inventions. He is an incredible force of creativity. Visitors will see him sketching from life. Varto is a Bay Area artist showing his work in downtown Napa, Oakland and Benicia. In Benicia, his work is displayed in Bella Siena, IronHorse in the Benicia Arsenal, and of course, at Arata Gallery. Patrons will have the chance to win a piece of art by entering a free drawing just for visiting during Art Walk.

Guests will also be able to meet artist Philip Venable, who will be showcasing his latest work from 11am-5pm.

At Benicia Plein Air Gallery, join Beth Winfield who will be doing a live demo from 3pm to 5pm. Beth is the Featured Artist for the month of July and her show “Call of the West” will be on display showcasing her journey into the great American Southwest.

Gallery 621 will be featuring the works of Daniel Hunter. Hunter's show is titled “Pages from a Painted Book.” The paintings are made by alternating layers of enamel spray paint with layers of wax resist on wood panels, and show his interest in spatial relationships, abstract shapes, gridlines, and bright contrasting colors. Conceptually, each work in the exhibition represents a page from an imaginary painted book. A reception for the artist will be held from 4:00 to 6:00pm.

Happy Life Pottery will be having a hand-made jewelry extravaganza! The shop will be hosting a reception for Jewelry Artist Linda Bodie, who will be on site with a special selection of her gorgeous jewelry, exclusive to Saturday’s event. They will also have a special selection of new jewelry available from artist Brenda Soi of San Leandro, as well as a new shipment of jewelry from ReStrung: hand-made jewelry from recycled guitar strings!

A portion of all proceeds from ReStrung go to music programs in under-privileged areas.

Gallery artists are in the process of creating a collaboration painting to be given as a prize on the Art Walk on the second Saturday in July. The painting, 24”x30” acrylic on canvas, is being created by artists Samantha McNally, Susan Street, Pat Calabro, Bruce Pope, Craig Moline, Annette Batchelor, Barb Duvall, Michal Lehmen, and Ok Kyong Hanrahan. Stop by to see the work in progress and fill out a free entry for the July 10 drawing.

The gallery will premier a stunning new collection by Geraldine Arata at an Artists’ Reception during Art Walk. Be among the first to view her new show-stopping collection of bejeweled and sculpted oil paintings. The gallery will also present new works by artist Greg Creason of New Orleans. His dramatic resine and inlaid blown glass portraits are in high demand and widely collected. Arata and Creason’s work are a visual delight and must be seen to be appreciated! Arata Gallery will be serving bottle water and individually wrapped treats from 1 to 4 p.m.

The paint-your-own ceramic studio and gallery is hosting a sidewalk sale of canvas paintings. You might catch a painting demo, too! They offer quality handmade art for sale and local Benicia souvenirs.

The Little Art Shop will awaken your senses with the creative works of over 30 talented local artists. During Art Walk, they will have a big sale on many of their handcrafted gifts and art. They are also hosting Mary Danko Williams, a talented and innovative fused-glass artist. New work is on display showcasing a variety of mediums. In addition to the ceramic art of David and Amy Stellato, they are excited to also have the visually stunning, mixed-media work by Travis White, Bay Area Artist. Additionally, they are introducing a series of photographic works by local artist, Nicholas Gallardo, in which a gorgeously rich and wide perspective of Benicia as a whole is given through many tiny “moments” fit together. They are also collaborating with Arts Benicia, who are presenting contemporary pastel and acrylic work by artist Ellen Gust.

Announcing: The Annual Benicia Art Walk Returns!

It’s been a challenging year, but with Solano County’s safety rating continuing to improve, the annual Benicia Art Walk is finally happening!

OCTOBER 10TH, 1 PM TO 5 PM

This Saturday, from 1pm to 5pm, Benicia is holding a one-day-only Art Walk, featuring six different galleries. You are invited to experience one of the most active arts communities in the Bay Area, including art and live demonstrations.

Come for lunch and stay for dinner. You’ll find great shopping and dining, amazing historical sites, and (of course) the beautiful waterfront.

You can find free parking all along First Street!

SAFETY GUIDELINES

If we all stay safe and respectful, everyone can enjoy the wonderful works of art on display. In addition to wearing face coverings and washing hands, each studio will be restricted to 50% occupancy to help ensure social distancing is maintained.

PARTICIPATING GALLERIES

ARATA ART GALLERY

Starting down the street from the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park, Arata Art Gallery will be featuring a live painting demonstration from guest artist Anna Wagner. The demonstration will be visible through the window, for the sake of safe social distancing. Weather permitting, there will also be art on display outside in front of the gallery.

In fact, 97% of survey respondents say having a trip planned makes them happier—and that’s exactly what we will encourage Americans to do this year.

BENICIA, CA (DECEMBER 1) - The City of Benicia has launched ,, Shop Benicia , an eGift Card program designed to encourage people to support small local retailers in Benicia while providing the public with a safe and convenient holiday shopping experience. The gift cards can be redeemed at any participating business in the city.

Cards appear on shoppers’ mobile devices, or may be printed at home, and are used just like a physical gift card for in-store or online purchases. Shop Benicia went live on Cyber Monday, November 30th. Cards can be purchased online at ,, www.VisitBenicia.org/ShopBenicia , where shoppers can also find a full list of participating retailers, updated as more businesses come onboard.

Shoppers can keep the bonus gift cards for themselves, or send them to loved ones via email or text message. Cards purchased never expire. Bonus gift cards rewarded by the city as part of a special limited promotion have an expiration date of February 28, 2021.

Participation is free for local Benicia businesses, who can sign up for Shop Benicia ,, here . The signup process takes only a few minutes, and includes custom-branded Shop Benicia eGift Cards, which can be sold on their company website, ,, Facebook pages , or through the Shop Benicia page, itself.

*Updated 12/14/2020: The Shop Benicia “ bonus ” eGift card promotion has been enormously successful. All Bonus eGift cards have been distributed and the promotion has now ended. Shop Benicia Bonus eGift cards expire 02/28/21. Special social-distancing measures have been put in place to make the experience as safe as possible for everyone. Here's a step-by-step guide for putting together your perfect Farmers Market sunset picnic!

First, let's talk about safety.

Benicia is committed to keeping visitors safe this summer, which is why the Farmers Market is following all official guidelines and regulations for sanitation. These guidelines apply to vendors and visitors alike.

Here's a quick checklist of things to remember for your trip:

Please come ready, shopping list in hand, so you can get in and get out quickly. Please treat the market as an essential activity, not as a social activity. And, send only one family member if you can.

Step 1: Come Prepared

Here's a list of what to bring with you:

Helpful Tip: The sun sets around 6:15pm in the autumn months, so try to visit the Farmers Market around 4pm to give yourself plenty of time to prepare and enjoy your picnic with natural lighting.

Step 2: Scope out the Area

Know where you will set up your picnic before you shop, it will mean less time carrying all that food around (especially important if you are shopping for the entire family)!

Step 3: Enter the Market with a Plan

First, go for the heavy stuff like cheese and hummus, or packaged items with sturdy casing. These items you can put in the bottom of your basket without worrying about the "squish factor." It is important to shop with intention and not idly. This way, the Farmers Market does not get crowded (and it leaves more time to relax and enjoy your picnic)!

Entered as part of Benicia’s Annual Downtown Scarecrow Display , these sci-fi scarecrows include “the Pain-dough-lorian” (The Mandalorian), “Baby Dough-da” (Baby Yoda) and “The Pandroid” (Bounty Android, IG-11).

The Mandalorian and his friends can be found outside of One House Bakery in downtown Benicia, near a wide variety of fun & quirky shopping opportunities and the beautiful waterfront (perfect for a picnic ). Visitors are encouraged to pose for selfies!

How it Was Made

The Paindoughlorian armor is made completely out of bread, or “pain” (the French word for bread). Baby Dough-da is floating in mixing bowls, and all his clothing is also made from bread. The Pandroid is made out of pans and other kitchen tools found in One House Bakery.

Head baker and co-owner of One House Bakery, Hannalee Pervan, who studied at Le Cordon Blue and worked as part of the bread-making team at The French Laundry in Yountville, CA, worked on this project for several weeks with her mother and co-owner, Catherine, before finally unveiling the sculpture earlier this month.

Each individual piece of iconic Mandalorian armor was hand-made, from a special dough called "dead dough" that's ideal for display purposes.

Making an Impact

After just a few hours, the “Pain Doughlorian” had already received over 70k upvotes on Reddit.

Every year, Benicia Main Street hosts the Downtown Scarecrow Display, where local businesses like One House Bakery showcase Benicia’s trademark creativity and artistic flair with unique scarecrows for visitors to admire as they stroll down First Street during the month of October.

Once Upon a Canvas and The Little Art Shop

Once Upon a Canvas and The Little Art Shop can both be found inside the historic Tannery Building, where visitors will be able to enjoy live demos from Beth Grimm, the famous iPhone Artistry teacher, and oil painter Linda Schreiber, one of Charles White's students. You can also expect to hear live guitar music from Marcy Orrendorf!

The Perfect Bike Ride For You

Tell me if this sounds familiar: you've been sitting inside all week, you forgot what fresh air feels like, and you're in desperate need of some Vitamin D. We've compiled a list of the ten best cycling and hiking trails in Benicia; relaxing and invigorating bike rides for all ages and all experience levels.

Breeze along the waterfront, explore the hills, or cycle past historic architecture from the California gold rush! From beginner to expert, this article breaks down ten winning choices to find the perfect trail for you. We've also included suggestions for things to do along the way, to guarantee you make the most of your visit!

PRO TIP: Explore the Carquinez Strait Scenic Loop ! This 50-mile loop travels the scenic shores and sweeping ridgelines of the Carquinez Strait, connecting over 10,000 acres of parks and open spaces - and 5 historic communities (like Benicia)!

Perk Up, Cool Off, and Rejuvenate

Most of Benicia's cycling trails intersect with the shopping area along First Street, which offers to-go indulgences like a coffee break , ice cream stop , or even the unusual (and wildly-popular) Sea Moss from Freshly Rooted Tribe , to kick up your fighting immune system.

Freshly Rooted Tribe has possibly the most unique menu in Benicia, with interchanging items such as Alkaline Koffee, Moss Fresca, Soursop Basil Mylk Tea w/ mango purée, Moss Fresca Mylk Bar, and Iced Soursop Basil Tea. If you don't know what any of that is, Benicia locals can assure you... it is delicious and incredibly healthy. Their slogan is “Health is Wealth.” If you agree, try out something from their ever-changing intriguing menu.

Cycling Trails for Beginners

A nice easy ride, a slight breeze against their helmet, and a slow pace. These next four trails are all categorized as “easy”.

1. Downtown Historic Walk/Ride

Starting at the First Street Green on East B street, you can easily park your car in the lot and hop out with your bike. This trail loops around downtown, past First Street businesses, the State Capitol, and five other historic buildings that were built in the 1800’s. With this trail, not only will you get some exercise, you will also get a dose of history. As a bonus, there are many places to stop and rest along the way.

2. Waterfront Walk/Ride

This next trail offers the best view of the Carquinez Strait. For an idyllic sunset ride, begin at about 7pm or earlier. Park at East B street off of First Street, then cycle to Ninth Street Park, where you can stop and enjoy the view (then enjoy the view even more as you head back)!

Distance: 1.2 miles

Time: 45 minutes

3. Benicia Marina Walk/Ride

This trail is short, easy and very flat. If you are with small kids, this might be the best trail to cover since there are no cars to worry about. Along the ride, you can see the different boats in the Marina, a trail lined with willow trees, and a climbable sculpture built by Benicia's own Robert Arneson. Park your car at First Street Green park on East B street).

Distance: 1.5 miles

Time: 20 minutes

4. Benicia State Recreation Area

This trail takes you to protected wetlands, botanical gardens, and surrounds you with nature. It's located right off the freeway, with easy parking and a low-key 5 mile bike ride with 2 small hills. This is the ride if you are looking for a “get away from it all” type of day.

Distance: 5 miles

Time: 35 minutes

Intermediate Cycling Trails

Now let's get a bit more challenging and check out the intermediate trails. Still on the easy side, but with a few hills here and there, and a bit longer than the first four trails.

5. Dillon Point Walk/Ride (Within Benicia State Recreation Area)

This trail is not meant for standard road bikes, you need mountain or hybrid bikes. Riding along the dirt trails, you will see views of Mount Diablo, the Carquinez Strait, and Zampa Bridge, scattered with native plants and animals. The trail is a fairly short 30 minute loop, but still offers a good little challenge.

There are a few benches along the way, and the starting point is at a picnic table. It's a good idea to grab a, picnic to-go from one of the shops on First Street before you head to the State Recreation Area to enjoy before or after your ride.

Distance: 1.5 miles

Time: 30 minutes

6. Historic Arsenal Walk/Ride

Another historic ride, but a bit more of a challenge. If you are into history, this is definitely the trail for you. Explore the east side of Benicia, including sites like the Jefferson Street Mansion, Commanding Officer's Quarters (pictured above), and Benicia's iconic Clock Tower.

Distance: 4.5 miles

Time: 36 minutes

7. Community Park to Southampton Park

Starting at Benicia Community Park, this trail has two uphill climbs, four parks, and goes for 4 miles. You are sure to get some great cardio on this ride. If you need a break along the way, the parks are great to stop and relax for a bit, do some cloud watching, or read a book.

8. Community Park to Waters End Park

Another trail that starts at Benicia Community Park, this trail loops for 3 miles through residential streets lined with charming vintage architecture, and has one uphill climb. If you want a little extra exercise, you could even do this trail before or after the above trail.

Time: 30-40 minutes

Strenuous Cycling Trails

These final two trails will make you work, sweat, and if you are a bit new, make you sore the next few days. They all have fun challenges, but they're completely doable if you have been on a bike more than a few times. Don't forget your helmet on these next two trails!

9. Lake Herman Loop

Starting at First Street Green on East B street, head through downtown Benicia along the waterfront, towards the Benicia State Recreation Area. There's a steep hill, a long downhill stretch, then it is past Lake Herman before heading back towards downtown along Second Street.

This trail travels 20 miles, with two uphills and two downhills. Scenic views include downtown shops, the waterfront, hills, lakes, and parks galore! This trail also passes over I-780 on a bike bridge.

10. The Grand Tour

The creme de la creme of biking trails in Benicia. This trail is meant for experienced riders only, on account of all the hills. In exchange for all the hard work, you will be treated to the best views of Benicia. After 25 miles, when your legs are all noodley, sit down and relax in downtown Benicia for a spell. Once Upon a Canvas: Make Art with Household Objects!

Mixed media artist , Colleen Gianatiempo will perform a live outdoor demonstration of how you can use everyday household objects to create a masterpiece! Credit cards, bubble wrap, string, plastic bags, corks, Q-tips, and more! Come to watch and enjoy the day.

Once Upon a Canvas events will be held outside, in front of the Tannery building, with safe social distancing from 1PM-3:30PM. More live art events will be held every second Saturday of the month: August 8, September 12 and October 10.

Artwork from member artists, ready for framing, will be featured in bins inside the gallery. HQ will also be adding space for small art and gift items in addition to the beautiful cards made by its members. Take home your favorite pieces and frame them your way, to match your decor!

The collection from “25 Artists, 25 Styles” is also on exhibit right now, with the Spring/Summer Celebration Show.

Gallery 621: Featured Artist of the Month

Gallery 621’s featured artist for the month of August is Daniel Hunter. Hunter has developed a new style of work for his showcase: a selection of pages from an imaginary book, Everything Explained . Each page features enigmatic lines of text in rich colors and shapes, surrounded by the border of contrasting colors and shapes.

Hunter’s new work can be seen at Gallery 621 from August 7 through September 6, Friday through Sunday, from 12 to 6PM. The gallery is located at 309 First Street, Benicia. Please wear a face mask. Hand sanitizer is provided at the door.

Benicia is routinely ranked as one of the safest cities in California, and we are doing everything we can to extend that commitment to safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to our local businesses ,taking measures to increase public safety, there are a number of things that visitors can do, as well!

This summer, the California Tourism Board developed the ,Responsible Travel Code to educate visitors on easy ways to be respectful of the health of others as you travel to new places. The Best Picnic Spots in Benicia

First Street Green

Located at the end of First Street, this large grassy area is surrounded by Benicia’s waterfront, palm trees and the historic Southern Pacific Train Depot. There's plenty of room to lay out a blanket, picnic spread, and throw a frisbee or fly a kite. You'll get full sunshine and a refreshing breeze, so make sure to bring a hat and some sunscreen!

If you’re visiting with your furry best friend , dogs are allowed to swim in the water off-leash at the beach below the Promenade and also the beach at the bottom of First Street on the backside of the turnaround. It’s the perfect picnic spot for the entire family.

The Capitol Lawn

If you love history and vintage architecture, this is the spot for you. This small patch of grass can be found beneath the magnolia tree and against the vibrant red brick of the State Capitol. You will find this area on the corner of First Street and West G Street.

City Park at First & Military West

At the corner of First Street and Military West, visit this large area with grass, a gazebo, shade, and the sunshine of City Park. There are five picnic tables and plenty of grass to lay on. Grab a good book, some snacks, and sandwiches. Relax for an afternoon of peace and quiet.

Marina Green

As you walk along the Benicia Marina, you will notice a beautifully-manicured grassy area with benches. Set up underneath the willow trees and enjoy the bay breeze while looking out at the rows of boats docked at the Marina.

State Recreation Area

Surrounded by trees, native plants, and Benicia’s protected marshlands, this 450-acre area offers unrivaled vistas of Benicia. The incredible trails and pathways offer a nice opportunity to follow your meal with a walk or bike ride.

The best part of this location is being able to hear the birds chirping and watch the butterflies floating by. Picnic tables are scattered throughout the rec area.

Ninth Street Park

This beautiful grassy area overlooks the Carquinez bridge. Circling that area is a few picnic tables if you want something more sturdy to sit upon. You can watch the ducks, herons, and sailboats float by while enjoying a beautiful meal.

States Coffee x Bread , Across from the Capitol Lawn

Across the street from the State Capitol is States Coffee x Bread , where you can grab specialty toasts and spreads, fresh-baked bread, or a delicious espresso drink using States Coffee Beans. If you are craving something sweet, they offer chocolate hazelnut butter spread on their home-made country bread. For something savory and more filling, try a handcrafted baguette sandwich.

OUTDOOR ARTS SHOWCASE: JULY 11th

Benicia visitors are in for a treat this Saturday afternoon, as several art galleries on First Street will be holding special showcases.

Live Oil Painting Demo: Once Upon a Canvas Artist Charles White of Once Upon a Canvas will be performing a live oil painting demo from 1-3:30pm, outside of the Tannery building at the south end of First Street.

Live Outdoor Oil Painting: Arata Art Gallery

Arata Art Gallery will be hosting their very own “Artist in the Window” event from 12-5pm, with Robert Evans doing a live demonstration creating an oil painting.

“Artist in the Window” will become a regular event at Arata Art Gallery that will give visitors to downtown Benicia an opportunity to watch an artist create a work of art while staying socially distanced in the outdoor air.

Also on exhibit is a new collection of plein air paintings by all 13 of the gallery's artists.

WHAT ARE BUSINESSES DOING TO KEEP ME SAFE?

Your safety is our top priority as Benicia begins reopening for visitors. That is why city officials are working to make sure businesses are aware of all the requirements issued by Solano County and the State of California. Here are some steps businesses are taking to ensure your safety when visiting Benicia:

SOCIAL DISTANCING Businesses are implementing physical distancing of 6 feet for customers, or using barriers. Signage emphasizing Social Distancing protocols are to be posted at each public entrance.

To ensure this is possible, businesses may limit the number of customers in-store and establish clear paths of travel, include markings on the floor.

Where social distancing cannot be maintained (transaction counters), solid transparent barriers, such as plexiglass, will be installed. Alternate work methods will continue to be used to limit the number of on-site employees to the extent practical.

FACE COVERINGS In accordance with the Governor’s orders, employees are provided necessary protective equipment, such as masks and gloves, to be worn during any interaction with customers. All customers are required to wear face coverings while indoors in a place open to the public.

Some businesses may even have Visit Benicia masks to pass out, if you would like one.

SANITATION All surfaces and common areas are regularly cleaned and sanitized. Sanitary wipes and/or hand sanitizers are also readily available and easily accessible for employees and customers to use.

SIGNAGE Signs are posted at each public entrance of the business to remind employees and customers on COVID-19 precautions:
